About the online course
The goal of this series of webinars is to integrate the series on temporomandibular disorders to dismantle classical gnathology concepts. Anatomical and (bio)logical reasonings will be the basis of discussion, with particular focus for suggestions to the category of professionals who are routinely involved in the muddy waters of occlusal practice (i.e., orthodontists, prosthodontists, restorative dentists).

Lesson 1
"Occlusion, body posture and temporomandibular disorders. Is there a correlation between them - myths and facts"
Daniele Manfredini
There are some communities of clinical practitioners claiming that, based on their anecdotic experience, there is a relationship between dental occlusion and body posture, not to say temporomandibular disorders. Those theories may be fascinating for the poor patients who search for pain relief, but they are scientifically unfounded and expose patients to unnecessary overtreatments that, in an era of evidence- and ethics- based medicine, are not acceptable.
  • Role of dental occlusion and body posture. Is there a relationship between them?
  • Should the treatment be based on the theory of the connection between dentistry and body position?
  • Are there clinically important relationships between dentistry and body?
Lesson 2
"What should an orthodontist do in patients with temporomandibular disorders""The end of classic gnathology"
Daniele Manfredini
For decades, the dental profession has relied on dogmas concerning the perfect correspondence between form and function. This idealism gave life to several mechanical theories that, in all fields of restorative dentistry, have been embraced by generations of professionals. On the other hand, that paradigm has been proven wrong: natural occlusion cannot be considered the target for diagnosis and correction for medical purposes anymore. This means that classical gnathological concepts make no sense from a biological viewpoint, and the dentist must change perspective!
  • Occlusion and temporomandibular disorders: From classical gnatological concepts to their refutation.
  • Anatomical and biological validity of occlusion for orthodontists, orthopedists and esthetic dentists.
Lesson 3
"What should an orthodontist do in patients with temporomandibular disorders"
Daniele Manfredini
Past belief of a relationship between TMDs and dental occlusion led generations of orthodontists to think that correcting malocclusions was the appropriate treatment approach for patients with pain in the TMJs or jaw muscles. Current evidence is not supporting that paradigm anymore, and orthodontists need to upgrade themselves to orofacial pain caregivers...or refer patients to a expert professionals without working on dental occlusions
  • An ideal form-function ratio: wrong paradigm?
  • Natural occlusion is not the purpose of diagnosis and correction for medical purposes.
  • Absence of connection between features of occlusion and pain, TMD disfunction or chewing muscles.
